WILLIAMSTOWN - The Tufts University golf team took ninth place out of 19 total teams at the 2017 Williams Fall Invitational held at the par-71 Taconic Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.
The Jumbos were 11th after Saturday's play when their four best scores totaled to 318. They improved 14 shots to a 304 team total on Sunday to finish at 622 for the two rounds. They were two strokes out of eighth place, where Amherst College scored 620. Tufts was four strokes in front of 10th-place Hamilton College (626). The Jumbos' Sunday score of 304 was fifth among the 19 times.
Tufts was led by sophomore Brandon Karr's two-over par 73 on Sunday. The Jumbos had two other sub-80 rounds on Sunday as senior co-captain Aaron Corn shot 75 and freshman Harry Theodore came in at 76. Freshman Alex Honigford was Tufts' fourth scorer on Sunday with an 80.
Karr led the Jumbos overall with a +12 154 during the two days, tying for 25th individually. Corn (82-75), Theodore (81-76) and senior co-captain Taylor Nordan (76-81) all posted 157 scores for the two rounds, tying for 33rd. Honigford's pair of 80s gave him a 160 score for the tournament (tied for 48th).
Trinity College won the Williams Invitational by five strokes with a 584 team score. They were led by individual medalist Will Rosenfield, who added an even-par 71 on Sunday to his three-under 68 from Saturday for a 139 finish (-3). Host Williams College came in second at 589 strokes.
The Jumbos play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Qualifier next weekend at Trinity, where they will look to place among the top four in order to earn a berth into the conference championship next spring. Tufts was fifth among NESCAC teams at Williams this weekend.
