Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University women's basketball team defeated Connecticut College, 75-54, at Cousens Gym on Friday night. The Jumbos (17-2, 5-1 NESCAC) never trailed the Camels (11-6, 2-4 NESCAC) in a game where they showed they weren't afraid to absorb contact to get to the free throw line 27 times.

Erica DeCandido led the way for the Jumbos with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Melissa Baptista added 14 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, while Jack Knapp had 13 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two steals of her own. Margaret Corcoran of Connecticut College led all scorers with 19 points, three rebound, and two steals. Casey Walsh added 10 points.
The first quarter started with the Jumbos seizing control from the beginning. Baptista opened the scoring with a layup and after a combination of buckets and free throws from DeCandido, Kaite Martensen, and Knapp, Tufts held a 16-8 lead. Walsh hit a three-point shot for the Camels, but not to be outdone, Lauren Dillon immediately answered back with a trey of her own. DeCandido finished the frame with nine points.
The second quarter began and DeCandido picked back up where she left off, this time going for six points in the quarter to give her 15 first-half points. Emily Briggs got into the action with a couple baskets in the quarter and Knapp hit a three with three minutes remaining in the half. The Jumbos went into the break up, 37-25. Margaret Corcoran led the Camels in the first half with nine points.
The third quarter was the closest, points-wise, of the game. The Camels opened the half with two consecutive shots, by Corcoran and Mairead Hynes. Jennie Mucciarone had a couple nicely executed up and under layups in the third that got the Jumbo bench excited. But the third quarter belonged to Baptisa who had 10 points in the frame, to help the Jumbos go into the final quarter up by 16.
Dillon hit her second three-pointer of the game in the fourth to finish with eight points and Mucciarone sunk a free throw to wrap her night up with five.
The Jumbos were able to get to the free throw line 27 times, making 22 attempts, which made the difference in this game they won by 21.
Tufts faces Wesleyan at home tomorrow at 3 p.m. and Connecticut will travel to Bates.
