BREWSTER – The Tufts University golf team improved its score by four strokes and jumped two spots in the team standings on Monday at the 2018 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) championship.
The Jumbos finished seventh out of 23 teams at the two-day event. After their four best scores added up to 320 on Sunday, they combined for a 316 today. Their 636 total was four strokes behind sixth-place Western New England and was two up on Johnson and Wales and Endicott, who tied for eighth place with 638 scores.
Three Jumbos shot in the 70s on Monday. Freshman Travis Clauson led Tufts with a four-over 76. Sophomore Alex Honigford shot 78 to score second for the Jumbos. Sophomore Harry Theodore and senior co-captain Brian Creonte carded a 79 and an 83 respectively to round out Tufts' scoring.
Honigford tied for 11th individually with his two-round 155 (+11). Clauson's 76 today was four strokes better than the 80 he shot on Sunday and his two-day 156 tied for 13th. Theodore posted a tournament total of 160 and Creonte finished at 165.
Babson College won the team title, moving up from second place on Sunday. They combined for a 300 score today to finish at 613 overall. Middlebury College's Reid Buzby won individual medalist honors with a 145 tournament total, one over par. He edged Babson's Niko Gianelos (146).
This was the 84th annual NEIGA Championship. Play was held at the par-72 Captains Course on Cape Cod.
Tufts completed its fall tournament schedule and their 2018-19 season will resume in the spring.
