Women's Swimming & Diving Opens New Year With Victory Against Middlebury

Sophomore Abby Claus won the 100 back and the 200 IM

MEDFORD – The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team had the top mark in all 16 events as they opened their 2018-19 season with a 167-116 win over Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Pool.

Three pool records were broken by the Jumbos to highlight the performance. Freshman Mary Hufziger had the first with a 1:56.90 to win the 200 freestyle. She also had the best time of the day in the 500 freestyle (5:14.14), led off the 400 freestyle relay which had the fastest time of 3:40.32, and swam the anchor leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:49.92) for a tremendous collegiate debut.

Sophomore Abby Claus also had two top times including a pool record. After winning the 100 backstroke in 1:00.45 halfway into the meet, she finished the 200 individual medley with a 2:11.24 that was a pool record later on. Sophomore Sasha Fong's 26.34 in the 50 butterfly was also the best time ever in Hamilton Pool. She was also a part of the 200 medley relay.

Another double-winner for Tufts was sophomore Lily Kurtz, who touched first in both the 50 (31.80) and 100 (1:08.40) breaststrokes. She also contributed the second leg to the 200 medley relay. Sophomore diver Amber Chong had the top scores in both the one-meter (270.60) and three-meter (224.77) events.

Other sophomore individual winners against the Panthers were Sook-Hee Evans in the 1,000 freestyle (10:56.59) and Amy Socha in the 100 butterfly (58.88). Joining Hufziger with strong debut performances was 50 backstroke winner Jeanette Khowong (28.03) and 50 freestyle winner Anne Younger (25.15).

Senior Colleen Doolan added a victory in the 100 freestyle with a touch of 54.54 seconds, while also anchoring the 400 freestyle relay top time team.

Completing the relays for Tufts was junior Grace Goetcheus in the 200 medley, and freshman Devina Bhalla and sophomore Jackie Crater in the 400 freestyle foursome.

The Jumbos are off until November 30 when they compete in the MIT Invitational.
