CAMBRIDGE – Members of the Tufts University women's swimming & diving team broke the school record in the 800 freestyle on the first night of the 2018 MIT Invitational Friday.
The record-setting foursome was junior Grace Goetcheus, freshman Mary Hufziger, sophomore Abby Claus and senior Colleen Doolan. They combined on a 7:36.47 time in the 800 free relay that broke the five-year old former Jumbo mark of 7:39.61 by more than three seconds. Friday night's time was also an NCAA B-cut and was first out of 22 foursomes at the meet.
The Jumbos also received a third-place finish from sophomore Sook-hee Evans in the 1,650 freestyle. In a field of 24 swimmers, she recorded a time of 17:35.50. Tufts also had the fifth-place finisher in sophomore Rhys Empey (18:05.70).
One-meter diving (six dives) was also contested on Friday night. Tufts sophomore Amber Chong posted a 270.65 score to finish third out of 22 at the meet.
In the team scoring, Tufts is first out of the 11 teams at the meet with 288 points. Host MIT is second at 256 points.
The MIT Invitational continues on Saturday with a morning session starting at 10 am and an evening session at 5:30 pm.
