CAMBRIDGE – Sophomore Lily Kurtz and freshman Mary Hufziger won events to lead the Tufts University women's swimming & diving team at the MIT Invitational on Saturday.
Competing on the second day of the meet, Hufziger won the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.59 time in the evening finals. She has posted the best mark in the morning preliminaries as well (1:53.92).
Kurtz had been the 100 breaststroke runner-up in the preliminaries at 1:05.22, but improved to 1:04.54 in the final to defeat MIT's Sara Nicholas by a 0.11 margin. Her winning time is an NCAA B-cut.
Sophomore Abby Claus had two good showings on Saturday, finishing as the runner-up in the 200 butterfly (2:05.46) and in third place for the 400 individual medley (4:33.44). The 200 fly time is an NCAA B-cut.
In the 200 free, sophomore Sook-Hee Evans moved up from third in the preliminaries (1:55.82) to second behind Hufziger in the final (1:54.92).
Tufts' 400 medley relay was the runner-up with a 3:56.20 mark. The foursome included junior Grace Goetcheus, Kurtz, sophomore Amy Socha and freshman Anne Younger. Socha also posted a third-place time of 2:06.64 in the 200 fly, moving up from fifth in the prelims (2:08.85).
The 200 freestyle relay of freshman Hannah Spencer, Hufziger, sophomore Sasha Fong and senior Colleen Doolan recorded a strong time of 1:36.69 for third place in the final.
In the three-meter diving events, Tufts' top finisher was sophomore Amber Chong who scored 232.80 points.
Tufts is second in the team scoring with 1,044.5 points through Saturday's events. Host MIT is in first place at 1074, with RPI a distant third (361). Eight teams overall are in the meet.
The final day of the MIT Invitational on Sunday starts with the morning session at 10:30 am. The evening session begins at 5:30 pm.
