Greeley Stymies Saint Vincent in 8-2 Jumbo Baseball Victory

Box Score
Brent Greeley went eight strong innings for Tufts

HAMPTON, Va. – Sophomore Brent Greeley pitched eight innings allowing just one run to lead the Tufts University baseball team to an 8-2 victory over Saint Vincent College at War Memorial Stadium on Sunday morning.

Tufts, in the midst of four games at War Memorial this weekend to open its season, improved to 2-1. They will finish the weekend with a game against Marymount later on Sunday afternoon.

Greeley allowed just three hits in his first six innings and did not allow a runner to reach second base during that stretch. By the time he gave up a run in the seventh, the Jumbos already had eight on the board. He allowed six hits, struck out three and did not walk a man in his second collegiate start.

The Jumbos had baserunners in each of the first four innings, but did not score. They broke through with two in the fifth as junior CF Casey Santos-Ocampo doubled home a run and executed a double steal with junior SS Will Shackelford, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

A lead-off single by senior DH Boomer Saraga and an rbi double by junior catcher Eric Schnepf grew the Jumbo margin to 3-0. They broke it open with five in the seventh as senior RF Malcolm Nachmanoff hit an rbi double followed by a two-run single from freshman 2B Ryan Daues. Two more runs scored on a Bearcats' error.

Matt Morrone led off the Saint Vincent seventh with a single, advanced to second on a ground out, took third on a wild pitch and broke up Greeley's shutout on a ground-out rbi by Eddie Kilkeary. Morrone led off the ninth with a single as well and scored on Kilkeary's single against Jumbo sophomore reliever Spencer Langdon.

Santos-Ocampo and Saraga both had two hits as Tufts finished with 10.

Matt Whittaker started and took the loss for the Bearcats, giving up six hits and three runs in 5.1 innings. Freshman Ryan Shirley threw 1.2 clean innings of relief for Saint Vincent.

Saint Vincent, located in Latrobe, Pa., returns to action on Tuesday with a double-header versus Mount Aloysius College at home.
