NEWINGTON, Conn. – The Tufts University golf team improved its team score by eight strokes in Sunday's round at the 2018 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship played at Indian Hill Country Club.
Tufts, who had their best-four scores total to 323 on Saturday, came in at 315 strokes on Sunday. Their two-day total of 638 was fourth out of the four teams in the tournament.
Host Trinity College won the 2018 NESCAC title and received the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Golf Championship. The Bantams scored 291 on Sunday to overtake Amherst College, who had led after day one. Trinity's 594 tournament total was followed by Amherst (608), Williams (609) and then Tufts.
After no one in the Tufts line-up scored lower than 80 on Saturday, all four Jumbo scorers shot in the 70s on Sunday. Junior Justin Feldman led Tufts with a 78 (+6). Senior Taylor Nordan, senior Aaron Corn and sophomore Brandon Karr all shot 79s.
Feldman was the top individual finisher for Tufts in 15th place with a 158 tournament score. Nordan tied for 16th with a two-day 159. Corn finished at 160 and Karr was at 161 for the Championship. Tufts freshman Harry Theodore also played for the Jumbos this weekend and went 87-81-168.
Trinity's Will Rosenfield, who shot three-under par 69 today, and Kole Kelly shared medalist honors for the tournament. Both had two-day totals of 145 strokes.
This was the final event of the season for head coach George Pendergast's Jumbos. The program took a big step this year by scoring third at the NESCAC Qualifier back in the fall, earning them a berth into conference finals this weekend. It marked the first time that Tufts was one of the four teams to advance to the conference championship since the qualifier was instituted in 2007. Prior to that, all of the league's golf teams played in the championship event.
