Women's Swimming & Diving Extends Lead After Day Two at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team extended their lead on day two of the MIT Invitational on Saturday.

Junior Abby Claus finished on the podium in three events.

The Jumbos have accrued 1223 points, while host MIT is second with 1022.5. Wellesley College ranks third with 361.5 points. Wheaton College, RPI, Simmons University, and Keene State College round out the field.

The Jumbo A, B and C teams finished third, fourth, and fifth in the 200 yard free relay, respectively. The A-relay team finished with a time of 1:36.40. They were made up of junior Amy Socha and freshmen Elle Morse, Hannah Lesser, and Camille Ross. The B-relay team, consisting of junior Sasha Fong, senior Brooke Bernstein, and sophomores Mary Hufziger and Hannah Spencer, finished with a time of 1:36.41.

Junior Abby Claus, Socha, and freshman Katelin Isakoff finished third, fourth, and fifth in the 200 yard fly. Claus (2:04.69), the top Jumbo finisher, was just over a second off the top time and recorded an NCAA B-cut. Socha and Isakoff finished with times of 2:06.04 and 2:06.28, respectively.

Hufziger and freshman Chloe Deveney finished on the top two steps of the podium in the 200 yard free. Hufziger completed the race in a time of 1:51.88 for an NCAA B-cut, and Deveney was at 1:52.27. Freshman Claire Brennan finished fourth with a time of 1:53.91.

Junior Lily Kurtz grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:04.98 was within the same second as both the second- and third-place finishers.

In the 100 yard backstroke, sophomore Emma Donchi finished in second at 57.43.

Claus, Deveney, and senior Grace Goetcheus swept the podium in the 400 yard individual medley. Claus had the fastest opening pass at 28.21 which propelled her to a 4:29.25. Deveney (4:30.75) had the fastest last laps, 30.61, which closed the gap as she finished just over a second off the pace. Both Jumbos achieved NCAA B-cuts. Goetcheus recorded a time of 4:33.21.

Donchi, Kurtz, Socha, and Hufziger were the top Jumbo relay team in the 400 yard medley relay in second place at 3:52.19.

In the 3-meter diving event, freshman Alaina Kosko was the top Jumbo finisher. She collected 225.10 points. Classmates Brooke Peterson and Sydney Ho were seventh and ninth in the event, respectively.

The Jumbos return to the pool for the third day of the MIT Winter Invitational on Sunday. They will start the morning session at 10:30 am, with an afternoon session to follow at 5:30 pm.
