CAMBRIDGE – For the second consecutive year, the Tufts University women's swimming & diving team won the MIT Winter Invitational which finished up on Sunday night.
Over the three-day event, the Jumbos totaled 1,788 points to top host MIT's 1,371.5 total. Wellesley College took third place (601.5) and Wheaton College was fourth (554) in the seven-team standings.
Freshman Katelin Isakoff won the 500 freestyle relay, where Tufts took five of the top six positions. Isakoff's 4:59.36 time was an NCAA B-cut. Classmate Chloe Deveney was second with a 5:01.20 mark.
The Jumbos again had great depth of scoring in the 200 backstroke, led by junior Abby Claus in second place with a 2:04.81 time. The Jumbos had five in the top nine overall. Claus was also the lead Jumbo in the 200 individual medley (2:08.64), placing right ahead of senior tri-captain Grace Goetcheus (2:08.78).
Junior Lily Kurtz recorded an NCAA B-mark in the 200 breaststroke with her third-place finish of 2:20.69. Junior Amy Socha added another B-cut with her 56.42 in the 100 butterfly for second place.
The Jumbos closed the meet with two of the top four finishes in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Isakoff, freshman Claire Brennan, Goetcheus and sophomore Mary Hufziger was second in a 3:32.62 touch. The second Jumbo team of freshman Elle Morse, sophomore Hannah Spencer, Socha and Claus timed 3:35.70 for fourth place.
Tufts had placed second in the 200 medley relay to open the action with sophomore Emma Donchi, Kurtz, junior Sasha Fong and Spencer combining on a 1:45.55 time.
Hufziger also took fourth in the 100 freestyle (53.16).
This was the final meet of the first semester for the Jumbos. They return to action at Boston College on January 14.
