Men's Tennis Defeated 7-2 by #14 Pomona-Pitzer in California Tuesday

Freshman Isaac Gorelik's win in fourth singles had tied the match 2-2 at the time.

CLAREMONT, Fla. – Playing their fourth match in as many days since arriving in California for their spring break trip, the #22 Tufts University men's tennis team fell 7-2 at #14 Pomona-Pitzer today.

The Jumbos were tied 2-2 after freshman Isaac Gorelik won in fourth singles, but the Sagehens captured the remaining five singles matches for the victory.

Avery Bicks and Charlie Stack earned an 8-1 #2 doubles win to get Pomona started on the day. However, the Jumbos evened the match early at 1-1 with sophomore Boris Sorkin with #1 doubles teammate Nathan Niemiec winning 8-4. Sophomore Jed Kronenberg with freshman Nils Skattum gave the Sagehens the advantage at 2-1 coming out of doubles with an 8-6 victory in a close #3 match.

Gorelik defeated Sam Gearou in fourth singles 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-2. However, Josh Gearou won the go-ahead #2 match for Pomona 6-1, 6-3 for a 3-2 lead. Wins by seniors Jacob Schoenherr at #6 (6-3, 6-4) and Octave Bellet at #3 (6-4, 7-5) clinched the match for the Sagehens.

The marquee matchup of the day had Sorkin, ranked #1 nationally in singles, up against #10 Kronenberg. The Pomona sophomore was able to pull out a 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory. In another three-set contest, Pomona's Quinn Hirsohn defeated Jumbo sophomore Owen Bartok 6-2, 2-6, 10-4.

Tufts (2-3) is off until Friday when they face George Fox in a neutral-site match at Claremont. Pomona (8-6) hosts Williams on Thursday.
