Golf Runner Up at NESCAC Qualifier, Earns 3rd Straight Championship Berth

WAYLAND – The Tufts University golf team finished as the runner-up at the 2019 NESCAC Championship Qualifier hosted by the Jumbos at Sandy Burr Country Club this weekend.

Entering round two on Sunday, the Jumbos were in third place after a team score of 296 on day one. They chopped four shots off that for a 292 on Sunday that gave them a 588 tournament score. Sunday's 292 was the best team round of the day.

The Jumbos, hosting the conference qualifier for the first time, finished two behind first-place Williams College, which scored a 586 (291-295).

This is Tufts' best-ever finish at the conference qualifier. As a top-four finisher, the Jumbos receive their third consecutive berth into the NESCAC Championship coming up April 25-26. Williams will host the spring championship as the first-place team in the Qualifier.

Tufts junior Henry Hughes had Sunday's lowest round with a two-under 70. He finished with a 146 for the weekend, fourth individually. Junior Harry Theodore shot a 72 on Sunday for a two-day 148 (+4) that was seventh overall.

Sophomore Travis Clauson came in at 74 on Sunday for a two-day 149 (+5) that tied for eighth individually. Scoring fourth for the Jumbos Sunday was sophomore Mac Bredahl who recorded a 76. His two-day 149 (+5) was also tied for eighth among the 50 golfers at the tournament.

Tufts senior Brandon Karr, who led the Jumbos with a 72 on Saturday, shot 78 today and finished at 150 for the weekend, tied for 12th.

Hamilton College also earned a conference championship berth with a third this weekend, finishing at 595. Trinity, sixth after Saturday, shot 295 Sunday to move in and take the fourth championship berth with a two-day 597.

Fifth-place Middlebury was seven strokes back (604) in fifth-place today. Ten teams were in the tournament field overall.

Williams College's Will Kannegieser won individual medalist honors by three strokes with a tournament total of 140 (four under par).

Tufts will finish the 2019 fall season at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association championship on Cape Cod coming up October 20-21.
