CAMBRIDGE - Freshman Eric Lundgren won the 200 backstroke on Sunday as the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team finished in second place at the MIT Winter Invitational.
Lundgren had the fastest time in the 200 back prelims with a 1:49.98 on Sunday morning, and then was three-quarters of a second faster in the finals with a 1:49.23 winning time.
Tufts accumulated a 1,771.5 team score during the three-day meet. Out of five teams competing the Jumbos finished behind only host MIT, who scored 1,842.5. RPI was the third-place team (712).
The Jumbos had a pair of runner-up relays on Sunday. Joshua Balbi, Emmett Adams, Ethan Schreier and Soeren Euvrard swam 1:29.85 in the 200 medley relay to start the finals. Nate Tingen, Schreier, Euvrard and Peter LaBarge combined on a 3:01.76 in the 400 freestyle relay to finish the meet.
Freshman Darrien Johnsen emerged with a 2:04.77 time to place second in the 200 breaststroke. He had recorded a 2:06.89 in the prelims.
Schreier posted a pair of third-place finals in the 100 butterfly (48.92) and 200 individual medley (1:52.00). LaBarge raced to a 45.07 finish in the 100 freestyle also for third place. Sophomore Eli Houlton was fourth in the 500 freestyle final with a 4:37.48 mark (4:36.28 prelims).
The Jumbos travel to Wesleyan University for a tri-meet with Williams College next Saturday.
