SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Freshman Jack Meehan had the lowest round, and the Tufts University golf team is in first place after day one of NESCAC competition at Ledges Golf Club on Sunday.
Tufts will enter next Sunday at Ledges with a one-stroke lead in the team competition. The Jumbos' four-best scores totaled 300 strokes today, just ahead of second-place Trinity College (301). Third-place Williams College came in at 303. Hamilton College is currently fourth back at 313 strokes. Eight teams overall are in the tournament.
The low team at end the of the competition next Sunday will be declared NESCAC champion and earn the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Meehan was the only player to finish under par today with a 70 (-2). Junior Travis Clauson shot 75 (+3) to score second for Tufts and tie for fifth individually. Senior co-captain Harry Theodore was third for the Jumbos and tied for seventh individually at 76 (+4). Senior co-captain Alex Honigford was the final Jumbo scorer with a 79 (+7), tied for 19th in the tournament.
Meehan has a two-stroke advantage over Trinity's Ricardo Leme and Middlebury's Jordan Bessele - who both shot even-par 72 - after one round.
Sophomore Kemp Bassett also competed for the Jumbos and had an 83.
