CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 2, 2022) -- The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team got its season underway Friday evening at the 2022 MIT Winter Invitational, and finished the day in first place in action from Zesiger Center Pool.
The evening started with a victory in the men's 800 freestyle relay in prime fashion, as the "A" relay team of sophomore
Ethan Schreier, first-year
Armaan Sikka, junior
Eli Houlton and sophomore
Eric Lundgren swam a "B" cut time of 6:39.22. The time was better than the 2022 NCAA Championships invited time in the event, and was just shy of breaking a school record of 6:38.76.
In addition to the "A" relay squad, the "B" squad finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 6:51.75, thanks to the efforts of sophomore
Charlie Duffy, junior
Will Stearns, Edwin Liang-Gliman and
Brian Uribe.
In the 1650 freestyle, which was the first individual race of the day, first-year
Nate Pfeffer swam a "B" cut time in his opening swim as a Jumbo. Pfeffer swam a time of 16:06.23, which was over 10 seconds better than the "B" cut standard as he finished second in the race.
Also in the mile, senior
Evan Szablewski also chalked up a "B" cut time as he finished third overall with a time of 16:08.90. First-year Louis Demetriades was right behind Szablewski in fourth place with a time of 16:35.29 for fourth place overall.
On the diving boards, the men's squad competed in the 3-meter event, and senior
Zach Lawrence took second with a six-dive score of 281.50. The score was just shy of NCAA Regional qualifying score of 285.00.
The Jumbos also saw five more divers earn points on Friday evening, as
Cameron Yuen taking fifth place with a final score of 231.90. Jeremey Lawrence was sixth with 220.85 points, while
Kai Renshaw took seventh with a 202.20. Junior
Ethan Cobos earned eighth place with 198.30 points, and
Jacob Morales finished with 177.95 points for ninth place.
Tufts finished with 247 points through the first day, almost 100 points ahead of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for second place with 156 points. MIT was third with 154 points, while Keene State College was fourth with 65 points and Emory University was fifth after scoring 43 points.
The second day of action at the MIT Winter Invitational will get underway Saturday at 10 a.m. at Zesiger Center Pool.
