CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 2, 2022) -- First-year
Madeleine Dunn won her first collegiate race in the 1650 freestyle, while the 800 freestyle relay earned a victory as well to highlight the first day of action at the 2022 MIT Winter Invitational in the season-opening day for the Tufts University swimming and diving team.
The Jumbos started the night with a victory in the 800 freestyle relay as the quartet of
Katelin Isakoff, first-year Lillian Klinginsmith, senior
Chloe Deveney and senior
Claire Brennan posted a "B" cut time of 7:24.75, which was also a pool record at the Zesiger Center Pool. The time was nearly 15 seconds better than the "B" cut time, as the defending NCAA champions in that event are off to a quick start in 2022-23.
Tufts "B" relay of
Cierra McCarty,
Katharine Skelly,
Sora Sohn and Isabella Chambers finished with the third-best time on Friday evening with a 7:42.11. The "C" relay of seniors
Liz Sutton and
Hannah Lesser, junior
Chesnie Cheung and firs-year Katherine Franco raced to a fifth-place finish with a 7:49.24.
In the 1650 yard freestyle, Dunn burst onto the scene with a fantastic race for the Jumbos, earning the victory with a "B" cut and school record time of 17:00.14. The time was 21 seconds better than the 2022 NCAA Championships Invited Time, and would have placed eighth at the last year's national meet. The time bested last year's school record of 17:07.68 set by
Katie Shelburne at the 2022 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships.
Senior
Allison Cremer finished third overall in the mile with a time of 17:34.17, while Shelburne was in fourth place following her time of 17:46.08. Senior
Allison Brea rounded out the top five with an 18:05.10. In the 1-meter diving even, first-year
Malia Leung took home third place with a six-dive score of 251.55, just off the NCAA Regional Championship qualifying score of 255.00.
Senior
Alaina Kosko was eighth with a score of 230.80, while senior
Sydney Ho was 11th after recording a six-dive score of 211.00. The women's squad sits in second place after day one with 222 point, only five points behind host MIT for the top spot.
The second day of action at the MIT Winter Invitational will get underway Saturday at 10 a.m. at Zesiger Center Pool.
