CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 3, 2022) -- Sophomore
Ethan Schreier broke the school record in the 200 butterfly Saturday, while sophomore
Eric Lundgren broke the school mark in the 100 backstroke to highlight action at day two of the MIT Winter Invitational.
Schreier broke his own school record from last year's 2022 NCAA Championships, as he won the 200 butterfly Saturday with a time of 1:47.16. The time was a "B" cut qualifying squad, while also over a second under the 2022 Invited Time from last year's NCAA Championships.
Lundgren finished second in the 100 backstroke, swimming a 48.05 for a "B" cut time while besting last year's NCAA Championships Invited Time of 48.63. The finish broke the record of 48.22, set by Kingsley Bowen back at the 2018 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships.
Those weren't the only standout performances on the afternoon for Tufts, as the Jumbos started the day with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The squad of
Armaan Sikka,
Charlie Duffy, Lundgren and Peter Labarge swam a 1:21.19, which was a "B" cut time while again besting last year's NCAA Invited Time of 1:21.32.
The "B" relay of
Alex Gu,
Soeren Euvrard, Schreier and
Will Stearns was fifth overall after hitting the wall in 1:23.71. In the 200 butterfly,
Tim Chou finished fourth overall in addition to Schreier's win after touching up in 1:53.17 for 19 points.
Sebastian Cai also earned fifth place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.17.
In the 200 freestyle, first-year
Nate Pfeffer was fourth overall with a 1:41.03 while Labarge and Houlton took seventh and eight places with times of 1:41.52 and 1:41.78, respectively. In the "B" final,
Will Stearns earn the victory for 11th place overall with a 1:42.28, and
Evan Szablewski was third in the "B" final and 13th overall after swimming a 1:43.73.
The 100 breaststroke saw Tufts go 4-5-6 and 8-9-10 in the "A" final, led by Duffy and his time of 56.31.
Emmett Adams was fifth after logging a time of 56.40, and Darrien Johnson earned sixth place after recording a time of 56.51.
Luke Isayiw earned eighth place in the "A" final with a 57.24, and
Willie Xu was ninth after posting a time of 57.70. First-year
Connor Townson also earned 13 points with a 58.22 for 10th place.
The "B" final in the 100 breaststroke saw first-year
Jack Moore take runner-up and 12th overall thanks to a time of 1:00.01. The 100 yard backstroke was highlighted by Lundgren, but
Jack Madden was fourth overall in the "A" final with a 50.34.
Vedant Bapna was sixth overal with a 50.92, and Schreier also earned 15 points with a 51.02.
The 400 IM saw sophomore
Brian Uribe take third place with a 4:08.77 in the "A" final, and Pfeffer was fifth overall after touching the wall in 4:09.03. Senior
James Kim and junior
Bora Calis were seventh and eighth respectively with times of 4:10.80 and 4:12.49. Junior
Luke Hruska also collected 11 points with a runner-up finish in the "B" final after swimming a 4:20.81.
The Jumbos picked up another win in the 50 freestyle, as Labarge recorded a "B" cut time of 20.35 for the win. Sikka was fourth overall in the "A" final after touching up in 20.93, and Duffy was seventh with a 21.14. In the "B" final, Stearns won the race to finish 11th overall with a 21.29.
The 400 medley relay finished the evening and Tufts took second as Lundgren, Johnsen, Schreier and Labarge picked up a "B" cut time of 3:17.35 for a runner-up finish. The "B" relay of Madden, Adams, Sikka and Duffy tallied a time of 3:22.00 for fourth place.
The Jumbos was right behind the Engineers of MIT for the top spot in the Invitational, trailing the hosts by just eight points as Tufts has 908 points going into the third and final day of action Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
