Men's Swimming & Diving Wins MIT Winter Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 4, 2022) - The Tufts University men's swimming & diving team won the MIT Winter Invitational on Sunday with a final score of 1766 points.

The Jumbos were leading the host Engineers by a 1010-937 margin following Saturday's action. Then on Sunday Tufts outscored the hosts to win by 101 points overall, as MIT finished at 1665 points for the three-day meet. Five teams overall competed at the meet, with RPI taking third place (849).

Sophomore Eric Lundgren was the only Jumbo to win a race on Sunday, swimming 1:52.09 to take the 200 individual medley. He also broke his own 200 backstroke school record today with a 1:45.57 time that was second in the meet and an NCAA B cut. His previous school record from last year was 1:46.04. On Saturday he had broken the Jumbo 100 back record with a 48.05 time.

Tufts had a great depth of performances and several swimmers who earned B cuts on Sunday. In the 200 medley relay to open Sunday's finals, Lundgren, sophomore Emmett Adams, sophomore Ethan Schreier and senior Peter LaBarge combined on a 1:29.33 time that was second and a B cut.

In the 500 freestyle, senior Evan Szablewski (4:35.55) and freshman Nate Pfeffer (4:37.74) were second and third. The same finishes were earned by freshman Armaan Sikka and Schreier in the 100 butterfly with 48.47 and 49.12 times, respectively. Sikka's mark is a B cut.

Tufts had the second through fourth scorers in the 200 breaststroke led by junior Willie Xu who touched in 2:03.54. He was followed by sophomore Darrien Johnsen at 2:03.92 and freshman Connor Townson at 2:04.21. Townson had been second in the prelims with 2:03.86 speed.

LaBarge was the 100 freestyle runner-up tonight with an NCAA B mark of 44.51 seconds. He then anchored the 400 freestyle relay that was also runner-up in a B time of 3:00.62. He was joined by Sikka, Lundgren and Schreier.

The Jumbos, 15th in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association national poll, defeated an MIT team that was ahead of them at #8 in the rankings.

Tufts finishes its first semester of competition with a quad meet at Wesleyan including Williams and WPI next Saturday.
