WATERVILLE, Maine - The Tufts University men's swimming & diving team broke two school records while remaining in second place at the NESCAC Championships at Colby College on Saturday.
Freshman Ethan Schreier placed second in the 100 butterfly with a 48.28 time that is a new Tufts record and an NCAA B cut. It replaced Kingsley Bowen's 48.47 from 2017 as the Jumbo standard. Joshua Balbi was seventh in the race with a 49.09 B cut as Tufts had four in the top 10 in the 100 fly overall.
On Saturday morning, Victor Vollbrechthausen (pictured) broke the school record in the 200 freestyle during the preliminaries with his 1:39.03 time. It was the second time at the meet that this mark had been broken. Schreier had timed 1:39.17 on his opening leg of the 800 freestyle relay Thursday night for a new 200 free record. Vollbrechthausen went on to place third in the 200 free finals tonight (1:39.22).
The Jumbos had a strong finish tonight as three swimmers placed among the top eight in the 100 backstroke. Nate Tingen (48.96) was fourth, Eric Lundgren (48.97) was fifth and Vedant Bapna (49.75) placed eighth. All three times were NCAA B cuts.
The Jumbos had started the finals with a 1:29.49 mark in the 200 medley relay for fourth place. Balbi, Luke Isayiw, Schreier and Peter LaBarge combined on the time that was an NCAA B cut.
Brian Uribe (fifth) and Edwin Liang-Gilman (seventh) finaled in the 400 individual medley with times of 4:03.89 and 4:05.89, respectively. Similarly, Jumbos Evan Szablewski and Eli Houlton were top eight in the 1,000 freestyle. Szablewski's 9:30.00 was sixth and Houlton touched in 9:36.31 for eighth.
Isayiw's eighth-place in the 100 breaststroke (56.72) led the Jumbos.
Tufts has accumulated a 1149.5 team score, behind meet leader Williams College (1487). Amherst College is third with 743 points. Eleven conference teams are at the meet.
The NESCAC Championships conclude on Sunday with trials at 10 am and the finals beginning at 5:30 pm.
