MEDFORD, MA (January 21, 2023) – Fourth-ranked visitor MIT and 14th-ranked host Tufts University battled at Hamilton Pool today with the Engineers earning a tight 153-145 win over the Jumbos.
MIT secured the win in the final event when they were first in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:24.24 time. Tufts'
Tim Chou,
Armaan Sikka,
Charlie Duffy and
Peter LaBarge were fractions of a second behind in 1:24.57.
The 200 medley relay to start the meet had been equally close, except with Tufts winning.
Eric Lundgren,
Emmett Adams,
Ethan Schreier and LaBarge combined for a 1:32.53 finish that edged the Engineers (1:32.58).
The Jumbos proved to be a deep team today as they earned the close finish despite MIT winning 11 of the 16 events.
Lundgren led Tufts with two wins on the day. He swam 49.80 to take first in the 100 backstroke, then later went 1:52.10 to win the 200 backstroke. He was also runner-up in the 200 individual medley at 1:54.95, right behind MIT's Roderick Huang who won in a 1:54.36 finish.
The Jumbos swept the butterfly events as well. Schreier had first touch in the 200 with a 1:51.64 time, then Sikka was first in the 100 at 50.49 seconds. The Jumbos went 1-2-3 in the 100, with
Soeren Euvrard second (51.21) and Chou third (51.83). Chou was also second in the 200 (1:56.38).
LaBarge scored valuable team points with runner-up times of 21.21 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 46.77 seconds in the 100 free. Sikka added a second-place mark of 1:43.62 for the 200 freestyle early in the meet.
For the distance freestyles, the Jumbos also scored second-place points by
Louie Demetriades in the 1,000 (9:59.02) and
Evan Szablewski in the 500 (4:48.99). Tufts had three of the four best times in both events.
Adams had another Jumbo runner-up mark in the 100 breaststroke of 58.72.
Willie Xu was close behind in 58.93 seconds, and was Tufts' top finisher (third) in the 200 breast with a 2:08.96 finish.
For diving, brothers Zach and
Jeremy Lawrence continued to perform well. Zach was second in one-meter today with a 307.35 score, while Jeremy was second in three-meter with 326.78 points.
Kai Renshaw also helped as Tufts scored well in the diving events.
The Jumbos will travel to upstate New York next Saturday to compete at Hamilton College along with RPI.
