Malia Leung won both diving events and the Jumbos were fastest in the two relays as the 9
th-ranked Tufts University women's swimming & diving team defeated Brandeis University in its season-opener at Hamilton Pool 149-116.
The Jumbos opened today's action with a 1:47.53 time to win the 200 medley relay. Harrison, Wheeler, senior
Esme Blackstock and senior
Jillian Cudney were the Tufts foursome.
Dunn dove right back in and won the 1000 freestyle with a 10:21.80 mark. She would later post the fastest time in the 200 backstroke with a 2:07.42 time. Junior
Cierra McCarty was second in the 1000 free at 10:58.40.
Harrison enjoyed an outstanding collegiate debut today. Individually she won the 100 backstroke in 58.91 seconds and then had the top time in the 100 butterfly at 58.82 seconds. Sophomore
Maddie Hagberg was behind her in the 100 back with a 1:00.46 touch.
Wheeler posted victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.17) and the 100 freestyle (54.33). Cudney was the runner-up in the 100 free at 54.45 seconds after winning the 50 free in 24.51 seconds in the previous event. First-year
Aliyah Larson was the runner-up to Wheeler in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.69 mark, and sophomore
Isa Chambers was fractions of a second behind Cudney in the 50 free with a time of 24.74 seconds.
Sophomore
Malia Leung was high-scorer in both diving events, contested on Friday at Brandeis. She won one-meter diving at 256.40 points, and the three-meter event with a 245.99 score. She was backed up by first-year
Arya Gupta in one-meter (242.39) and by junior
Nika Renshaw in three-meter (241.41).
Junior
Lara Wujciak won the 200 butterfly, posting a 2:08.24 time. She was followed by classmate
Valeria Strohmeier who touched in 2:12.74.
Selin Tuncay, another first-year making her Tufts debut, had the fastest 500 freestyle time today (5:20.91) after taking second in the 200 free (1:58.88). Sophomore
Avery Newcomer in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.26) and junior
Emma Claus in the 200 individual medley (2:13.26) also had the fastest times in their event.
The Jumbos closed the meet with the top mark in the 200 freestyle relay. The combination of first-year
Alexia Palko-Lacerda,
Katharine Skelly, Tuncay and Cudney put together a 1:41.58 time.
The lone winner for Brandeis was Chloe Gonzalez in the 200 freestyle at a 1:58.18 time.
The Jumbos will return to competition December 1-3 at the MIT Invitational.
