Women's Swimming & Diving Runner-Up at MIT Winter Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 3, 2023) – The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team finished second out of seven teams at the MIT Winter Invitational which wrapped up on Sunday night.

Tonight's finals saw the Jumbo 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay place second, as did sophomore Madeleine Dunn in the 200 backstroke and junior Lara Wujciak in the 100 butterfly. This all helped Tufts finish with a point total of 1348.50 that was behind only host MIT (1939.50).

Tufts opened Sunday night's finals with first-year Elena Harrison, sophomore Quinci Wheeler, sophomore Jade Foltenyi and senior Jillian Cudney swimming a 1:44.66 time for second place in the 200 medley relay. The time was faster than the NCAA B cut (1:44.99) and is the #9 fastest foursome in Tufts history.

The Jumbos later closed the meet with a runner-up 400 freestyle relay time of 3:29.68 by Wheeler, sophomore Isa Chambers, Harrison and Cudney. The mark was 10th among the Jumbos' fastest foursomes in the event.

Dunn's 2:03.92 in the 100 backstroke was second at the meet, while sophomore Maddie Hagberg had a preliminary time of 2:02.37 that was under the NCAA B qualifier (2:03.17). Senior Elise Fong submitted a solid 2:06.22 in the final.

Wujciak's runner-up time of 56.36 in the 100 butterfly final was right in front of Harrison who was third in 56.76 seconds.

Two Jumbos hit the NCAA 11-dive qualifying mark in the one-meter competition today. Sophomore Malia Leung's 440.90 was sixth at the meet and made her fifth in school history. Freshman Arya Gupta earned a 405.00 score that was 10th at the meet and above the NCAA qualifying score of 395.

Sophomore Avery Newcomer was third in the 200 breaststroke final with a 2:21.56 mark that placed her sixth all-time at Tufts. In the 100 freestyle Cudney and Chambers went 3-4 in the final with times of 52.18 and 52.31. Chambers' time got her into the Jumbo top 10.

First-year Selin Tuncay swam 5:06.62 in the 500 freestyle preliminaries and then was third in the final with a 5:08.41 mark. First-year Sydney Stasz was the top Tufts finisher in the 200 individual medley final with a 2:08.95 mark for fourth place.

Tufts will finish out the first semester with a quad meet at Wesleyan University next Saturday including Williams and WPI.
