NEW YORK, NY (February 25, 2023) – Both senior
Sydney Ho and first-year
Malia Leung from the Tufts University Women's Swimming & Diving team placed among the top 10 in the three-meter contest held at the NCAA Diving Regional hosted by NYU today.
In a large field of 26 competitors, Ho finished ninth with her 384.40 score. Leung was 10th after compiling 382.50 points.
The NYU Regional will send eight divers on to the NCAA Championships coming up March 15-18. The national berths are based upon this weekend's results, which puts the two Jumbos on the bubble in terms of moving on to the national meet. The official announcement of NCAA qualifiers will be made on Monday.
Ho finished today's competition in fine fashion with a Back 1 Somersault 2 1/2 Twist Free that was given a 41.85 score, her highest of the day. With it she jumped from 11th-place into her ninth-place final standing. She also had a pair of 39.10 scores from earlier in her optional dives, for a Forward 2 Somersault Pike and a Back 1 1/2 Somersault Pike.
Leung had the best Tufts mark of the event with a 44.10 for a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault Tuck 44.10, and also scored 42.55 with a Forward 2 Somersault Pike. She added an Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike that earned a 42.00 score.
Host NYU's Issara Schmidt won the NCAA Regional title in the one-meter event today with a 425.90 score. She won off both boards this weekend, scoring 435.20 for first place in the three-meter competition on Friday. Tufts' Leung was 14th in the three-meter championship and Ho was 19th on Friday.
This was the second NCAA Diving Regional for Ho, but first since 2020. She was 17th in three-meter and 18th in one-meter at the 2020 Regional. This was the first regional qualifier for Leung.
