Jumbo Men Earn Seventh NCAA Basketball Tournament Berth

MEDFORD, MA (February 27, 2023) - The Tufts University men's basketball team earned a Pool C selection into the 2023 Division III Men's Basketball NCAA Tournament on Monday, as the Jumbos will head to New Hampshire to battle Widener University (Pa.) at Keene State College.

Schedule: Friday, March 3 – Tufts vs. Widener, 3 pm and Keene State vs. Baruch, 5:30 pm / Saturday, March 4 – Friday's winners, 5:30 pm

The Jumbos (19-7) will take on Widener (19-8), winners of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth (MAC Commonwealth), at 3 p.m. in Friday's opening round game, while the host Keene State (26-1) will battle Baruch College (22-5) at 5:30 p.m. The winners will play Saturday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. for a spot in the NCAA Division III Round of 16.

Tufts has never played Widener University or Baruch College before in program history, while Tufts is 6-5 all-time against Keene State with the last meeting coming in 2010, a 86-64 win for the Owls. This is the seventh NCAA berth for the Jumbos overall, but the first with head coach Brandon Linton. Tufts has a 10-5 overall record in the tournament with berths in 1995, 1997, 2006, 2016, 2017 and 2020. They went to the "Elite 8" in 2016.

Widener has won its last two games and seven of its last eight coming into the NCAA Tournament, defeating Alvernia University 74-69 in the MAC Commonwealth title game. The Pride will be making their 17th NCAA Tournament appearance overall, but first since 2009. They have a 19-18 record in NCAA games. Widener was an NCAA finalist in 1978 and a "Final Four" team in 1985.

The host Owls were 83-79 winners over Western Connecticut State University in the Little East Conference final for an automatic berth into the tournament. They will be making their eighth NCAA appearance with a 10-7 record heading into the 2023 dance. Baruch is the CUNYAC champion following an 83-82 overtime win against Lehman College. This is the seventh NCAA Tournament for the Bearcats and they will be seeking their first-ever NCAA victory (0-6).
