BOSTON (February 3, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's swimming and diving squad competed in the first day of competition Friday night at the Boston University Winter Open, competing in five events in action from the BU Aquatics Center and Competition Pool. The Jumbos raced against a mostly Division I field Friday evening, with a small smattering of regional Division III squads as well.
The Jumbos first competitors on Friday night were in the 500 freestyle, and junior
Katie Shelburne led the way for the Jumbos with a time of 5:09.88 for seventh place. The time was a season-best for the junior, while senior teammate
Allison Brea touched in right behind her in eighth place with a new season-best time of 5:12.73.
Additionally in the 500 freestyle,
Liz Sutton raced to a new season-best time of 5:15.91, trimming over five seconds off her previous season-best of 5:21.04. In the 200 yard IM, senior Emma Van Duijnhoven swam to a new personal-best of 2:09.45 to earn third place for the night, while teammate
Emma Claus was right behind her in fourth place with another season-best of 2:09.61.
Valeria Strohmeier was sixth in the 200 IM as well, as the sophomore swam a season-best 2:11.16 and
Bella Preneta recorded a new season-best time of 2:14.76. In the 50 freestyle, junior
Jillian Cudney earned the lone win for Tufts of the night as she raced to a time of 23.42. The time was the best of any Jumbo this season.
Katharine Skelly was seventh as well with a 24.27, a new season-best time, and
Hannah Lesser earned 13th place with a new season-best 24.38.
Abby Miller also swam a season-best time in the 50 free with a 24.85, and
Avery Newcomer was right behind her with a season-best 24.86 for 24th place.
Katie Franco's time of 24.87 also established a new season-best time. In the 3-meter diving event, Tufts'
Ariana Mehrotra finished 15th with a new season-best score of 229.90.
The Jumbos entered a pair of relays in the 400 freestyle relay, taking third and fourth place in a field of five teams. The "A" relay of Newcomer, Miller,
Marissa Chow and Skelly swam a 3:36.61, while the "B" relay finished in 3:43.20 thanks to the swims by Van Duijnhoven, Sutton, Shelburne and Preneta.
The busier second day of action at the BU Winter Open will get underway at 1:30 p.m. with the first session while the second session of Saturday's competition will begin at 7 p.m. The full meet schedule can be found
