BOSTON, MA (February 4, 2023) – The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team finished its weekend at the BU Winter Open with two sessions on Saturday. The meet featured a mixture of Division I and III teams from around the region.
In the afternoon, Tufts had it highest finishes as
Katie Shelburne was first out of six in the 1,650 freestyle with a 17:32.20 mark and
Valeria Strohmeier was first of three in the 400 individual medley at a 4:38.97 touch.
Jillian Cudney had a solid day in the freestyle events. She was third in the 200 during the afternoon with a 1:52.84 time. She came back in the evening for a 51.42 in the 100 that was also third.
Elise Fong also submitted a good pair of performances on Saturday. She was sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.41 seconds in the afternoon. Her 2:05.02 in the 200 backstroke Saturday night was fourth in the race.
Abby Miller's fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.19) was one of the better Jumbo finishes.
Avery Newcomer, who followed Miller in the 100 breast in eighth place (1:06.76), would later add a fifth of her own of 2:22.92 to lead the Jumbos in the 200 breaststroke.
Emma van Duijnhoven also had a top-eight mark in the 200 breast with a 2:23.73 time.
In the afternoon,
Hannah Lesser was Tufts' top participant in the 100 butterfly in 57.84 seconds. Saturday evening Strohmeier had Tufts' top finish of 2:09.32 in the 200 butterfly.
Ariana Mehrotra led the Jumbos in one-meter diving with a 236.15 score that was 13th overall.
Tufts' relay times for Saturday included 1:38.35 in the 200 freestyle relay for first place, with Newcomer, Miller,
Marissa Chow and
Katharine Skelly swimming. The 3:59.99 in the 400 medley relay by Fong, Miller, Lesser and Shelburne also was first. Lesser, Van Duijnhoven,
Bella Preneta and
Emma Claus put together a 1:49.33 in the 200 medley relay for second place.
With Tufts competing in several time trials at meet, Lesser and Cudney had good times of 25.62 and 25.65 in the 50 butterfly, respectively. Fong in the 50 backstroke (27.12) and Miller in the 50 breaststroke (30.24) also posted marks which equate to top 10 all-time for the Jumbos.
Head coach
Adam Hoyt's Jumbos will be at the NESCAC Championship Meet hosted by Bowdoin College starting this coming Thursday.
