AUBURN, ME (April 30, 2023) - Day two of the 2023 NESCAC Men's Golf Championship was shorted to nine holes due to rain and the Tufts University Jumbos finished in a tie for second place.
Tufts' four top scores today totaled to 156 strokes, which added to yesterday's full-round team score of 298 gave the Jumbos a 454 final. They tied with Amherst College, and both teams finished 15 strokes behind tournament champion Middlebury College (439).
At Martindale Country Club, where par on the front nine is 35, junior
Toby Rudolph led the Jumbos today with a three-over 38. He started strong with a birdie on the first hole.
Jack Meehan and
Kemp Bassett both shot four-over 39's on Sunday.
Holden Kittelberger was the Jumbos' four scorer today at 40.
Travis Clauson was the fifth Tufts golfer after shooting 42 today.
Meehan had the highest Tufts individual finish with a fifth-place for his 27-hole total of 110. Clauson tied for 11th (113), Kittelberger tied for 22nd (116) and Bassett and Rudolph were tied for 36th (119).
Middlebury earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship. Eight at-large invitations are available to teams around the nation, but will be hard to get for NESCAC runner-ups Tufts and Amherst.
Four individuals shared medalist honors for the 2023 conference tournament with 109 scores (+3) after 27 holes - Hogan Beazley (Middebury), Benjamin Boyd (Trinity), Steven Chen (Amherst) and Colin McCaigue (Middlebury).
The tie for second place matches Tufts' best finish at the NESCAC Championship. They were second last year and also in 2003.
