MEDFORD, MA (May 12, 2023) -- The No. 1 Tufts University men's lacrosse team starts its journey through the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament this weekend, but late Thursday afternoon the Jumbos were honored individually with eight All-Americans on the USA Lacrosse Magazine Division III Men's Lacrosse listing, the most of any team in the country.
Tufts saw three players earn a spot on the First Team, as attack
Jack Boyden, face-off midfielder
Mason Kohn and defender
Joey Waldbaum were all selected to the top team. Midfielder
Charlie Tagliaferri and defender
Kyle Adelmann were Second Teamers, while senior attack Kurt Brunn, long stick midfielder
Michael Ayers and short-stick defensive midfielder
Joe Murtha were Third Team honorees. No other team had more than five players, while Salisbury University was the only other squad with three or more players on the First Team.
Boyden, a two-time All-NESCAC First Team selection and NESCAC Player of the Year, has scored 60 goals to go with a NESCAC-leading 79 assists for the Jumbos. The attack leads the NESCAC in points per game (7.72) and owns the top three individual scoring performances in the league this season, totaling 13 points versus Amherst and Stevens and registering an 11-point effort against Middlebury.
Kohn has won 207 of his 290 draws on the season, while scoring five times and assisting on two other tallies for the Jumbos. His 9.19 ground balls per game is the best in the NESCAC. Waldbaum has led one of the best defenses in the nation, as he is first on the squad in caused turnovers with 36 while adding 66 ground balls in 2023. Waldbaum has also tallied two goals and an assist, which came on a full-field heave at the end of the first half in a victory over Hamilton.
Tagliaferri comes into the weekend having played in all 18 games for the Jumbos, scoring 33 goals to go with 11 assists. He has posted two man-up goals, adding 13 ground balls and 103 shots this season. Adelmann is second on the squad in caused turnovers this season, ranking seventh in the NESCAC with 1.94 caused turnovers per game. His 35 CTs are fifth-most in the league this season.
Bruun enters the weekend ranked sixth in goals per game in the conference with 2.94, posting 53 tallies to go with 39 assists. His 2.17 helpers per game is seventh-most in the NESCAC, and his 5.11 points per game are the fourth-most this season among attackmen in the NESCAC.
Murtha has done it on both ends of the field this season, as he has scored 11 goals to go with seven assists, 11 caused turnovers and 25 ground balls. He is also a staple on the man-up unit, tallying six man-up goals throughout the campaign. Ayers is third on the team in caused turnovers this season, adding 47 ground balls along with a whopping nine goals from his long-stick midfield spot. Ayers has one game-winning goal, chalking up three assists as well this season.
The Jumbos will take on Emmanuel College at noon Saturday, May 13 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Bello Field.
