CAMBRIDGE, MA (January 27, 2024) – Junior
Cierra McCarty and sophomore
Quinci Wheeler won events as the #8 Tufts University women's swimming & diving team lost 208-92 to fourth-ranked MIT on Saturday.
Wheeler's victory came in the fifth swimming event of the meet, where her 1:03.03 topped the field in the 100 breaststroke and broke her own school record (1:03.58 previously). McCarty would win the 500 freestyle in a 5:03.62 mark late in the meet.
Wheeler had helped Tufts start the day with a 1:43.05 time that was second in the 200 medley relay. The team of first-year

Jillian Cudney were defeated by MIT's 1:42.30 time.
The Jumbos had runner-up finishes in the next two events, with senior
Katie Shelburne timing 10:25.93 in the 1000 freestyle and sophomore
Madeleine Dunn swimming 1:53.80 in the 200 freestyle.
Sophomore
Maddie Hagberg was third for Tufts in the 100 backstroke (58.79). First-year
Aliyah Larson was also third behind her teammate Wheeler in the 100 breast with a 1:04.56 finish.
Harrison added to her strong day with a runner-up mark of 2:06.26 in the 200 butterfly. She was again second in the 100 butterfly a few events later with her 56.52 time.
Cudney was edged in the 50 freestyle sprint where her 23.66 was second, and sophomore teammate
Isa Chambers took third (24.16). Cudney was later third in the 100 free (52.11).
Dunn's good 2:03.80 time in the 200 backstroke was third, with Hagberg behind her in fourth at 2:04.61. Wheeler had a third in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.15) where sophomore
Avery Newcomer also submitted a solid time of 2:23.16 for fifth.
First-year
Arya Gupta was Tufts' top diver for the day. She scored 469.13 points in three-meter for sixth place, and had a 458.02 score in one-meter for seventh.
Junior
Emma Claus had Tufts' best 200 individual medley (2:09.49 for fifth) and the Jumbos were the runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay to end the meet. Chambers, Cudney, first-year
Sydney Stasz and Claus touched in 1:35.76 behind MIT's 1:34.94 victory.
A deep Engineer team had eight individual winners overall, with Ella Robertson taking first in three events (50 and 100 free, 200 IM), and Kate Augustyn (100 and 200 back) and diver Fiora Beratahani winning twice each.
The Jumbos will swim at home for the final time next Friday night against Hamilton College for their Senior Day.
