CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 7, 2024) - In a remarkable first-semester performance, the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team broke five school records on day two of the MIT Winter Invite on Saturday.
New Tufts standards were set in the 400 individual medley (Eric Lundgren), the 200 freestyle relay, the 200 freestyle (Ron Lyubman), the 100 backstroke (Lundgren) and the 400 medley relay.
Led by those outstanding performances, Tufts is in first place at the meet with a 983 team score. Host MIT is second (760) and RPI is in third place at a 509 score.
The first record of the day was set in the morning when Lundgren swam a time trial in the 400 IM and finished in a 3:55.77 mark. That broke one of the oldest records in Tufts' books - a 3:56.65 by James McElduff from 2018. The time was also within the NCAA B cut of 3:58.93.
In tonight's finals, the Jumbo 200 free relay of Campbell McFall, Lundgren, Will Kaminski and Soeren Euvrard opened with a 1:20.23 school record. The previous mark of 1:20.35 was from 2020. Tonight's time was second in the event and within the NCAA B mark of 1:21.55.
Freshman Ron Lyubman joined the fun by breaking the 200 freestyle record tonight with his 1:38.64 for second place in the final. He removed teammate Rafae Shafi's 1:38.80 from last year in the record book. Lyubman's time was faster than the 1:39.40 NCAA B qualifier.
Lundgren notched his second record of the day in the 100 backstroke by winning tonight's final in 47.56 seconds. The time was 0.02 faster than his own school record from 2023. It was also an NCAA B cut (49.28). He would then lower the mark to 47.28 with the lead-off leg of the 400 medley relay later in Saturday's action.
The Jumbos then closed the meet with a winning and record time of 3:12.35 in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Lundgren, Emmett Adams, Ethan Schreier and Euvrard broke the previous record of 3:12.44 from last year. It's also within the 3:18.26 B cut.
In the 200 butterfly this evening, Schreier won the final with a 1:47.37 time that was not far from his 1:47.16 school record and is well under the 1:49.88 NCAA B cut. Shafi was fourth in the final also with a B time of 1:49.74.
Adams added a 55.09 B cut in the 100 breaststroke for third place in that event, while Euvrard later swam 20.23 for second place in the 50 freestyle. His 20.22 in the morning session stands as his B mark (20.37). Kaminski was third in the 50 free with a touch of 20.60 seconds.
Tufts also scored third in the 200 free relay tonight with a 1:21.98 time by Alex Gu, Adams, Charlie Duffy and Schreier. Connor Townson had Tufts' best finish of 4:00.71 in the 400 IM final for third place.
Divers Cameron Yuen and Elias Brandt both scored beyond the 11-dive NCAA qualifying mark in one-meter (425) today. Yuen was second in the event with a 494.50 total and Brandt was third (466.30).
The third and final day of the MIT Winter Invite tomorrow has morning and evening sessions again that start at 10 AM and 6 PM, respectively.
