CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 6, 2024) - Junior
Madeleine Dunn and sophomore
Sydney Stasz broke school records on Friday night as the Tufts University women's swimming & diving team opened competition at this weekend's MIT Winter Invite.
Dunn broke her own school record in the 1650 freestyle, winning the event with a 16:49.76 time that lowered her previous school record of 16:51.90 from the 2023 NESCAC Championships. Dunn's time was also well under the NCAA B mark of 17:21.20.
Stasz, swimming in a time trail, had a 58.00 time in the 100 individual medley to break the previous Tufts standard of 58.88 by Lily Klinginsmith in 2022. The time also set a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) record, erasing the previous 58.19 time by Williams College's Sophia Verkleeeren from 2023.
Tufts also swam a pair of NCAA B cut times in the 800 freestyle relay tonight. The team of
Quinci Wheeler,
Selin Tuncay,
Isa Chambers and
Noa Chambers combined on a time of 7:37.66 that was third in the event tonight and below the 7:38.31 B cut. Sophomore
Elena Harrison led off another Tufts team with first-years
Sophia Knight and
Clara Behling and senior
Lara Wujciak that scored for the Jumbos in fourth place tonight with a 7:38.14 B time.
The Jumbos had three in the top four in the 1650 free at MIT.
Cierra McCarty swam third in a 17:30.68 mark and first-year Lia Strober was fourth in a 17:43.41 time.
Tufts is second out of five teams at the meet with a 141 score, just two points behind first-place MIT (143). RPI is in third place with a 116 score.
Saturday's action at the MIT Winter Invite includes morning and evening sessions that begin at 10 AM and 6 PM, respectively.
