BOSTON, MA (February 9, 2024) – Tufts University senior
Bora Calis broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke while swimming a time trial at the Boston Winter Open which started on Friday night at Boston University.
Calis' 2:01.70 mark tonight bettered the time of 2:01.80 from
Connor Townson last year which stood as the record.
The Jumbos consider the Boston Winter Open meet as the start of the championship season, with some of the team members who will not take part in the NESCAC meet seeing their final action of the year.
Freshman
Will Kaminski added some strong swims for the Jumbos. In a race that included Division I participants from Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and others, Kaminski was fifth in the 50 freestyle with a 21.00 mark. In time trials that were also held tonight, Kaminski touched in 26.04 seconds for the 50 breaststroke.
The Jumbos had the fourth and fifth finishers in the 500 freestyle, where freshman
Josh Schultz was fourth (4:39.39) and classmate Josh Harrison was fifth (4:44.62). Sophomore
Louie Demetriades swam 4:46.38 in that race and classmate
Kapil Shetty had a 4:54.58.
Tufts had three of the top 10 finishers in the 200 individual medley with freshman
Evan Wang fifth (1:51.96), graduate student
Luke Isayiw seventh (1:56.71) and senior
Luke Hruska 10th (1:59.03). Senior
Sean Carr was also in the race and recorded a 2:02.90 time.
A half-dozen other Jumbos joined Kaminski in the 50 freestyle. Junior
Alex Gu swam 21.21, freshman
Jan Springer had a 21.72, sophomore
Jack Moore touched in 22.69 seconds, senior
Julian Chun came in at 26.73, freshman
Arbert Xu had a 26.79 and senior
Jerry Yang finished in 27.64.
Chun was also with Kaminski in the 50 breaststroke time trial, recording a 26.61. Moore submitted a 200 freestyle time trial mark of 1:49.09. Xu was behind Calis' record in the 200 breaststroke TT in 2:04.18, while Springer and Harrison were at the front of a 50 freestyle time trial with 21.67 and 21.88 marks, respectively.
For three-meter diving on Friday, sophomore
Jeremy Lawrence placed fifth with a 270.55 score and junior
Cameron Yuen was sixth at a 227.65 mark.
The bulk of the meet will take place tomorrow with sessions at noon and 6 pm.
