New England Championships Underway As Tufts Posts Three In Top 10 At Pentathlon

MEDFORD, MA (February 23, 2024) -- The 2024 Division III New England Championships got underway on Friday afternoon inside the Gantcher Field House on the campus of Tufts University, and the Jumbos had three competitors finish inside the Top 10 in the field in the pentathlon. 

Senior Madelyn Silveira posted a season-best total in the multi event, as she finished fifth overall with a point total of 3095. Teammates Sydney Spivy was ninth with a new personal-best point total of 2693, while first-year Tessa Player earned a 10th place finish with a new collegiate best of 2590. 

In the first event of the afternoon, Silveira was fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.42 for 824 points, while Spivy took 10th with a 10.20 and Player chalked up a new personal best with a 10.43. 

In the high jump, Silveira finished ninth in the event for 544 points after clearing 1.43 meters. Spivy was 10th in the high jump with a mark of 1.40 meters, while Player took 12th place with a 1.31 final cleared height. 

In the shot put, Silveira crushed her previous personal best in the event with a strong heave of 9.20 meters for the sixth-best performance in the event. Spivy took third in the shot put with a new collegiate best of 10.45 meters, while Player was eighth with a final mark of 8.42 meters. 

The long jump saw Silveira take fourth place after just missing a personal-best with a leap of 5.07 meters, adding 578 points, and Spivy added 479 points after taking ninth in the event with a mark of 4.70 meters. Player was seventh in the long jump after finishing with a personal-best jump of 4.80 meters.

In the final event of the day, Silveira raced to a time of 2:31.66 in the 800 meter run for a third-place finish while chalking up 672 points. Player was right behind her with a new collegiate-best time of 2:37.35 for fourth place, and Spivy was 11th with a 2:49.62. 

Emma Wheeler from Connecticut College was the winner of the event with 3330 points, while Thomas College's Emma Burr was second with 3294 points. 

The second and final day of action is set for Sunday at 9 a.m., as the full day of competition is slated at The TRACK at New Balance in Brighton.
