Women's 5000m Group Strong In Day Two At Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 15, 2024) -- The Tufts University women's track and field squad put three runners in the top six in the 5000 meters Friday, highlighting the second day of action at the 2024 Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, SC. 

Sophomore Grace Ogden led the Tufts' group in the 5000m run, as she finished with a personal-best time of 18:09.84 for third place overall. Classmate Elizabeth Donahue was right behind her in fifth place, also tallying a new personal-best with a time of 18:22.36 for fifth place.

First-year Katya Henisz ran her first collegiate race outside, and was solid with a sixth-place finish after running an 18:29.53 in the 5K, while fellow first-years Sophia Carpenter was 11th with an 18:40.82 and Taylor Neldner ran a 19:06.92 for 13th place. 

In the 100m hurdles, senior Sarah Pillone ran a time of 15.05 seconds to qualify for Saturday's finals as she was sixth in the prelims. Pillone also ran in the 100m dash, leading all Jumbos with a time of 12.92 seconds. 

Junior Jordan Andrew ran a 13.15 in the 100m dash, while Nyla Thompson posted a time of 13.40 seconds and sophomore Tamia Dubidad ran a 13.57. 

In the hammer throw on Friday, junior Liz Graham had a strong day with a heave of 41.57 meters for 19th place and junior Maja Nielsen had a personal-best toss of 39.41 meters for 23rd place. First-year Ceci LaBarge also was 30th overall with a final mark of 36.39 meters. 

In the long jump, Andrew took 36th place overall with a mark of 4.57 meters on her second of three jumps on the day, while Dubidad was 44th overall with a 4.42 meter jump. 

The pole vault saw Tufts best finish on the day individually, as Lena Tang was second after clearing the bar at 3.35 meters. Thompson cleared 3.05 meters for sixth place, and Amelie Wickham took seventh place with a final cleared height of 3.05 meters. 

The heptathlon also finished its competition on Friday,and senior Maddy Silveira made a huge charge up the leader board to take fourth place overall with 3983 points. Silveira was sixth in the long jump with a mark of 4.88 meters, climbing from 11th to 8th place in the process. 

Silveira was then second in the javelin throw with a final toss of 33.65 meters, adding 546 points to her total while moving up to sixth. The final event of the weekend was the 800 meter run, and Silveira was fifth with a time of 2:37.45 for 602 points. 

First-year Tessa Player started the afternoon in 17th place but moved up seven spots to take 10th place with 3477 points. Player was fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 31.37 meters, and then ended the day with an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters with a 2:35.74. 

Sydney Spivy also took 12th place, moving up one spot from her day one position with 3363 points. 

The third and final day of action at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday inside Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
