SOMERVILLE, MA (March 30, 2024) -- In the first full outdoor's meet of the spring season for the Tufts University women's track and field squad, the Jumbos showed their depth and strength in earning a victory in the 2024 Tufts Snowflake Classic on Ellis Oval Saturday afternoon.
The win saw the Jumbos more than double the second-place team, as Tufts posted 149 points on the day while eclipsing Connecticut College and it's 72 points. Brandeis also chalked up 70 points.
Tufts earned a pair of victories on the day Saturday, highlighted by a victory by
Maelynn Ugokwe in the triple jump, as she recorded a final mark of 10.83 meters. Junior
Sarah Firth also chalked up another win in the pole vault on Saturday, as she passed until 3.55 meters, clearing that height and 3.70 meters before dropping out at 3.86 meters.
The Jumbos had a bevy of second-place finishes as well as
Harper Meek was a runner-up in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.81 for eight points. Classmate
Emma Smith was right behind her in sixth place with a time of 1:02.39 in the 400 meter run as well.
In the 10000 meters, junior
Madeline Huh ran a personal-best 38.56.29 for a second-place finish, and
Gwenyth Stach was sixth overall with a 41:16.04.
Sarah Pillone finished second in prelims of the 100 hurdles with a 15.75, improving to a 15.00 in the finals to finish second. Junior
Antonia Knoth recorded a personal-best 16.14 in the finals to take third place, and
Maddy Silveira was seventh in the finals with a 16.71.
The Tufts' 4x100 relay of Pillone,
Annika Kral, Silveira and
Simisola Lawal took second place after running a 50.72, and Pillone also completed her busy day with a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.04 meters.
Other strong performances included a strong outing by Lawal in the 100 meter dash, as Lawal ran a 12.80 in the semifinals for the second-best time before taking fifth place with a time of 12.82 seconds.
In the 1500 meters,
Lexi Dean was fourth overall with a 4:52.35 while sophomore classmate
Grace Ogden ran a new personal-best time of 4:53.43 for fifth place. In the 5000 meters,
Elizabeth Donahue was third overall with an 18:09.91 and first-year
Sophia Carpenter ran a 18:26.38 for fifth place and four points.
In the high jump, first-year
Lexi King flew over the bar at 1.52 meters for fifth place, and fellow newcomer
Emma Gall was fifth overall in the pole vault after finishing with a successful jump of 3.40 meters.
Tamia Dubidad recorded a triple jump mark of 10.59 meters for a bronze medal finish.
Junior
Liz Graham had a great day for the Jumbos in the throws, as she was fifth in the shot put with a mark of 10.00 meters, and junior
Sydney Spivy was sixth overall with a mark of 9.98 meters on her first attempt of the day. Silveira worked on her javelin skills in preparation for multis later in the spring, and had a great day with a fifth-place throw of 31.07 meters.
Ravyn Tammiruusu scored for the Jumbos in the discus with a final mark of 33.47 meters, taking fourth place, and Graham took fourth in the hammer throw after recording a heave of 41.70 meters.
Maja Nielsen was fifth in the hammer throw after a toss of 38.96 meters, and
Ceci LaBarge was seventh with a throw of 38.22 meters.
The Jumbos will head to the Amherst College Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6 in Amherst, MA.
