BRUNSWICK, ME (October 10, 2025) -- The Tufts University women's tennis squad opened action at the 2025 Bowdoin College Invitational Friday afternoon, tying with Babson College 5-5 in singles action while falling to Middlebury College in doubles' play 3-1.
The Jumbos started against the Beavers in singles' play, and played 10 individual matches against Babson. Senior
Ellie Gershaw earned a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (8) win over Jolie Wang, while first-year
Claudia Grove rolled to a straight set win over Alessandra Cristiani 6-3, 6-3. First-year
Kyra McCandless chalked up her first collegiate singles' win for the Jumbos, as she rallied to earn a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9) win over Dana Kamal.
Junior
Natalie Hu also won in a super-tiebreaker over Mia Sorrentino of Babson, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6), while senior
Stephanie Woodbury bested Grace Starcher 6-3, 6-1. Senior
Lucy Mitchell dropped a heartbreaker at the No. 3 position, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (1), 1-0 (7), while senior
Nikki Kintiroglou also fell in a super, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (6).
In doubles' play later in the afternoon,
Athena Li and Gershaw teamed together to knock off Elizabeth Doak and Charlotte McCann 7-5 at the No. 4 spot. Hu and
Stephanie Woodbury battled hard, but fell in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7), while Grove and McCandless fell at the No. 3 position 6-3.
The Jumbos will battle Bowdoin College in singles' play at 10 a.m. Saturday, while taking on Brandeis University at 1 p.m. and Babson at 3 p.m. in doubles.
