BOSTON (February 8, 2025) – The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team competed in two sessions at the Boston Winter Open on Saturday. The meet is the unofficial start to the championship season for the Jumbos.
The noontime session began with Tufts'
Valeria Strohmeier and Sara Sohn competing in the 100 butterfly. They were 16th and 19th with times of 59.37 seconds and 59.79 seconds, respectively.
The 400 individual medley followed, where Tufts'
Angelina Sagaow placed sixth (4:38.46) and
Sophia Knight swam seventh (4:39.48).
Sweeney Su had a personal best of 1:53.48 to lead three Jumbos in the 200 freestyle. She was fifth in the event. Tufts'
Clara Behling recorded a 1:56.43 mark for 12th place and
Alexia Palko-Lacerda finished in 2:03.03 for 23rd place.
For the 100 backstroke in the afternoon session,
Anna Gjervold was ninth in 59.10 seconds. Tufts'
Alya Hocaoglu was close behind in 11th place (1:00.08).
Hocaoglu also led off the 200 medley relay with a 50 backstroke personal-best of 28.45, helping the foursome place seventh overall in a 1:52.38 mark. She was joined by Behling, Sohn and Su.
The 1650 freestyle was the final event of the afternoon session.
Lila Strober had a strong fourth-place swim of 17:42.37 and
Alli Brown swam a personal-best 17:48.06 in the event for sixth place.
Su added her second personal best of the day to start off Saturday's evening session. She swam a 24.21 50 free and the 200 free relay group including Brown, Palko-Lacerda and Knight were fifth in a 1:38.96 time.
The 200 backstroke was the next evening event and Tufts posted two top-10 marks with Gjervold fifth in 2:05.81 and Hocaoglu ninth in 2:09.74.
Two personal-bests were notched in the 100 freestyle. Su again, at 53.02, led Tufts in ninth place. Knight also had a personal best, a 53.17 that was 10th. Behling in 12th (53.30) and Palko-Lacerda's 55.48 also represented the Jumbos.
The 200 butterfly would be one of the top Jumbo events in terms of finishes. Sagaow swam fourth with a 2:06.84 time and Strober had a sixth-place mark of 2:07.29.
The final swimming event of the evening session was the 400 medley relay where Tufts was third. Gjervold, Sohn, Behling and Su combined on a 4:01.96 finish.
Three-meter diving was also held on Saturday with four Jumbos in action.
Luci Karp was the top Tufts finisher in fifth place with a 204.40 score.
Arya Gupta (167.30) and
Nika Renshaw (164.50) were sixth and seventh, respectively.
Riley Metz took ninth (156.95).
Among Saturday's time trials, Palko-Lacerda's 27.78 in the 50 butterfly and Sagaow's 59.61 in the 100 individual medley were personal bests.
Along with Tufts and BU, Boston College, Brown University, Colgate University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, College of the Holy Cross, MIT and Northeastern University competed at the meet, which was not scored.
