NEW LONDON, CT (April 13, 2025) - Following an excellent Round 3 performance on Sunday, the Tufts University coed sailing team placed sixth at the Thompson Trophy Team Race which finished today.
Tufts was in eighth place after Saturday's racing, which had one full round-robin and a second one started. On Sunday, the Jumbos finished the second round-robin and then won five out of seven races in the third round-robin.
With 2-5 records in the first two rounds, and then the third-round 5-2 mark, Tufts' 9-12 overall record (.429) jumped up to sixth place for the end of the regatta.
Earlier on Sunday, Tufts had a win over the University of Rhode Island and losses to Roger Williams University and U.S. Coast Guard Academy to finish the second round. In Round 3, the Jumbos defeated Boston College, Roger Williams, Tulane University, Coast Guard and Rhode Island and lost to Harvard University and College of Charleston. The win over BC came against the team that finished second overall at the regatta, and the win over Coast Guard was a 1-2-3 finish.
Harvard placed first overall with an 18-3 record (.857).
Tufts used several different combinations over the weekend. In the successful third round, junior skipper
Ben Mueller sailed exclusively with sophomore crew
Courtland Doyle, sophomore skipper
Kurt Stuebe teamed up with senior crews
Naomi Pedersen and
Nicolas Echarte and sophomore skipper
Wyatt Bischoff raced with senior crew
Cindy Wang and first-year crew
Kate Castleberry. Mueller and Castleberry were also a duo during a Round 2 race on Sunday.
The Jumbos will now await a potential at-large berth into the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Team Racing Championship, which will be announced on Tuesday.
