MEDFORD, MA (April 16, 2025) - The Tufts University baseball team faltered to close the regular season slate at home, dropping their one-off with Babson 11-5 on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a quick start from the Beavers (16-8) as they plated a run in the top of the first inning. The pitching staff would require all hands as they dug into the bullpen to start.
Michael O'Brien was on the bump in the first, and gave up the first run after a double landed just inside the left field line.Â
The Jumbos responded right away, with
Cooper Smith driving in
Jesse McCullough with a double. They even managed to gain the lead by the end of the first inning, after
Owen McKiernan singled through the left side to score Smith and
James Henshon.Â
The Beavers tied it up once again in the top of the fifth, plating a pair of runs off of
Patrick Fanning. Once again though, the Jumbos responded with a run of their own.
Ben Leonard reached on a double, and advanced to third on a balk, setting the table for Smith. The hard-hitting outfielder picked up his second RBI of the day with a single to left field.Â
The staff day went sour for the Jumbos soon after, as the visitors put up eight in the top of the sixth. With an 11-4 deficit to overcome, the home side had to chip away. The Beaver's pitching staff tightened up, and held the Jumbos to just a single run in the bottom of the eighth.Â
It was a subdued conclusion to the home schedule of the regular season, with the Jumbos falling to 12-14 on the year. Tufts will head down to Hartford to take on Trinity in the penultimate NESCAC series of the season.Â
