Junior Melissa Burke scored her first career hat trick

MEDFORD -- Juniors Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) and Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) each scored a hat trick to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 7-0 NESCAC win over Colby College in a field hockey game on Homecoming Day in Medford.

The hat trick is the fourth of Brown's career. She also had an assist, marking her second seven-point game of the month. She had two goals and three assists against Endicott on October 1. With the seven points, Brown became the program's all-time leading scorer with 98 points on 43 goals and 12 assists. She broke Aryn Landau's record of 97 points during the 1987-90 season.

Burke's hat trick was the first of her collegiate career. Tufts, ranked third nationally, remains undefeated at 9-0 and 5-0 in the league. They have won 29 straight regular-season games. Colby falls to 4-5 (1-5 NESCAC) on the year.

Brown set the tone early with a great individual effort that put Tufts up 1-0 just 32 seconds into the game. Tufts continued to pressure the Mules, testing Colby goalie Liz Fontaine (Wilbraham, MA).  The hosts added to the lead with 10:06 left until halftime with Burke's first goal of the day, a tap in on a nifty pass from senior Michelle Kelly (Downington, PA). That ignited the Jumbos, as Brown and then Burke each scored in the final three and a half minutes before the half putting Tufts up 4-0. First-year Rachel Gerhardt (Worcester, MA) got her first collegiate point with an assist on Brown's goal.

The second half started much as the first with Brown tallying seven minutes in to complete the hat trick with her 10th goal of the fall. Junior Tess Guttadauro (Carlisle, MA) dove to put a rebound of Brown's shot home 2:12 later and the rout was on. Finally, with 18:42 on the clock Burke completed her own hat trick.

Most of the Jumbo starters sat the remainder of the game as everyone on the roster played. Goalies Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) and Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC) split time for the shutout, recording two saves each. Fontaine finished with 16 saves on the day, including 10 in the first half.

The Jumbos next play Connecticut College at home on Wednesday in another key NESCAC tilt at 4:00. Colby hosts Thomas on Wednesday at 6:00.
