MEDFORD -- Junior Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA)
scored her second hat trick in as many games to become the Tufts
University field hockey program's all-time leader in goals during
an 8-1 Jumbo victory in a NESCAC game against Connecticut College
on Wednesday at Bello Field.
After breaking the team's career points record on Saturday vs.
Colby, Brown entered today's game one goal shy of Aryn Landau's
career record for goals (44). She tied the record with the third
Tufts goal of the game at 25:33 and broke it at 28:24 to give the
Jumbos a 4-0 lead. Her third goal in the second half was the 46th
of her career. Brown also had an assist in the game and with the
seven points she now has 105 for her career.
The Tufts offense is rolling, with 24 goals scored in its last
three games. Senior Michelle Kelly (Downingtown,
PA) added two goals and an assist today, while sophomore
Lindsay Griffith (Wilmington, DE) finished with a
goal and an assist. The third-ranked Jumbos improved to 10-0
overall, 6-0 in the league and have won 30 straight regular-season
games. The Camels lost their fourth straight to fall to 3-6 and 2-4
in NESCAC.
Kelly scored the game's first goal 5:46 in off a pass from
junior Jess Perkins (Barrington, RI). With
continued pressure, Tufts was then awarded two penalty strokes when
nearly identical shots by Kelly were blocked by the bodies of Camel
defenders in the goal mouth. Connecticut College keeper Steph Quinn
(Arlington, MA) made a nice save on the first one, but Tufts senior
co-captain Margi Scholtes (Grosse Pointe, MI)
scored on the second to put Tufts up 2-0 at the 9:03 mark.
For her record tying-goal, Brown won a battle for the ball with
a Camel defender in front of the goal and slammed home a shot for
her 11th of the season. Less than three minutes later, she
converted a pass from Kelly and Tufts led 4-0 at intermission. CC's
only shot on goal in the first half came off the stick of senior
tri-captain Kelsey Fredericks (Nantucket, MA), and it was saved by
Jumbo sophomore Marianna Zak (Concord, MA).
Kelly's second goal barely two minutes into the second half put
the Jumbo advantage at 5-0. Griffith scored with 30:31 on the
clock, and then senior co-captain Amanda Russo (Garden
City, NY) deflected a shot by Griffith for a goal with
27:17 to play. After a defensive save by Camels sophomore Liz
Rosenfeld (Leola, PA), Brown whacked in the rebound for her third
of the day and the last Tufts tally with 23:43 left.
The Camels got on the scoreboard with just under 15 minutes
remaining as sophomore Hannah Wagner (Sudbury, MA) scored off a
crossing pass from classmate Sierra Olney (Providence, RI).
The Jumbos finished with a 28-6 advantage in shots and 15-2 in
penalty corners. Quinn stopped 11 shots in the Connecticut College
cage. Junior Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC)
played the second half for Tufts and made one save.
Tufts hosts Trinity College on Saturday in a battle for first
place in the conference at noon. The Camels are at Middlebury that
day with an 11:00 am start.
