Box Score
MALDEN -- Williams College senior forward Alex Smigelski
(Mountain Lakes, NJ) had a goal and an assist, and Ephs senior
goalie Marc Pulde (Lexington, MA) made 35 saves as the visitors
earned a 2-0 shutout win at Tufts in NESCAC men's hockey action on
Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II.
Combined with a 3-2 overtime win at Connecticut College on
Friday night, Williams (2-0) swept the opening weekend of the
season against conference opponents. Tufts, who had a 3-3 tie
against Middlebury on Friday night, dropped to 0-1-1.
The Jumbos controlled the majority of the first period, although
they could not capitalize on three power-play chances. Williams put
a flurry of shots on goal late. Junior Ben Contini (Toronto, ONT)
broke in on Tufts goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA), but the
Tufts sophomore gloved the shot for one of his 14 saves in the
period. Pulde had 11 at the other end.
The teams played 17 more minutes of scoreless hockey in the
second period until the Ephs got on the scoreboard. Freshman John
Wickman's (Dallas, TX) shot was saved by Barchard, but sophomore
Justin Troiani (Woodbridge, ONT) was there off the right post to
shoot in the rebound at 17:17. The Ephs took their 1-0 advantage
into the intermission. Pulde stopped 13 Jumbo shots in the
second.
The one-goal margin lasted until the final minute of the third
period. The Jumbos had two more power-play opportunities go
unfulfilled in the third. On Friday night, Tufts had scored when
they pulled Barchard to tie the game against Middlebury. When they
did it again today, Williams was able to tally an insurance goal
into the empty net as Wickman sent Smigelski in alone and he scored
at 19:06.
The shutout is the fourth of Pulde's career. He was steady, as
the Williams defense limited Tufts' good scoring chances. Wickman
assisted on both goals for the Ephs.
Barchard made 42 saves in the Tufts net, including 15 in the
second period. Williams finished with a 44-35 advantage in shots.
The Jumbos were 0 for 6 on power-plays, while Williams was 0 for
2.
