RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Tufts hockey team built up a 4-0 lead after
two periods and earned a 5-2 victory to win the Rutland Herald
Invitational against host Castleton State College on Sunday
afternoon. Juniors Conor Pieri (Needham, MA) and
Lindsay Walker (Castlegar, BC) had a goal and an
assist each to lead the Jumbos.
The tournament victory is the first for Tufts since the team won
the 2000 Coca-Cola Classic at Stonehill College. Tufts, now 2-2-1
overall, defeated Neumann, the defending NCAA Division III
champion, 5-2 on Saturday night in the Rutland Herald tourney.
Castleton (1-2-1) beat Becker, 6-1, in the opening round.
After junior Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ) scored a
power-play goal for Tufts to open the scoring at 17:58 of the first
period, the Jumbos added three goals in the second. Freshman
Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) scored his first
collegiate goal at 6:43 for a 2-0 Tufts advantage. Pieri's goal was
shorthanded, unassisted at 8:59, and gave Tufts a 3-0 margin.
Walker made it 4-0 with his first goal of the season with 3:40
remaining in the second.
Jumbo sophomore goalie Scott Barchard (Reading,
MA) made 20 of his 30 saves overall in the first two
periods. Castleton's Evan Romeo put one past him at 2:15 of the
third period to cut the gap to 4-1. However, five and a half
minutes later, Tufts junior Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs,
CO) returned the lead to four goals (5-1) with his third
of the year on a power-play at 7:48. Lindsey Gullett finished the
scoring for the Spartans at 16:45.
The Jumbos had two power-play goals while holding Castleton to 0
for 6 in man-advantage situations. Eleven players overall scored
points for Tufts. Diaco, Pieri, Walker and Barchard were named to
the All-Tournament team.
Starter Seth McNary made 13 saves for Castleton before he was
yanked in favor of Arthur Hollinger, who finished up with seven
saves.
Tufts returns to league action with a weekend trip to New
England College and Saint Anselm College coming up (Dec. 4-5).
Castleton is at Colby and Bowdoin next weekend.
