MALDEN -- The Tufts University hockey team finished its first
semester of action with its fifth consecutive victory, 3-2, at home
against Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum
II.
Tufts, which matched a five-game winning streak during December
and January of last season as its longest since 2000-01, improved
to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in NESCAC/ECAC East play. Connecticut
College (1-7, 1-4 NESCAC/ECAC East), which battled back from a 3-0
deficit to make the game interesting, lost its third in a row.
The teams played a scoreless first period, with each killing off
two penalties and each taking 13 shots. Tufts sophomore goalie
Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) and his Connecticut
College counterpart Greg Parker (Trenton, ONT) were both on their
marks.
The Jumbos quickly seized a two-goal advantage early in the
second period. On a power-play, junior Tom Derosa
(Charlestown, MA) scored at 4:47 to give the hosts a 1-0
lead. Less than two minutes later at 6:20, Tufts was up 2-0 after a
goal by freshman Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ).
Barchard stopped all 11 CC shots in the second period and the
Jumbos carried the 2-0 advantage into the second intermission.
A pretty goal by junior Lindsay Walker (Castlegar,
BC) at 5:04 of the third gave Tufts a 3-0 margin. Junior
Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ) fed a wide-open Walker
coming down the slot with a pass from the right of the goal.
However, the Camels stayed alive when freshman Sean Murray
(Stamford, CT) beat Barchard from the left side just two minutes
later at 7:06 making it 3-1.
With under seven minutes remaining and both teams in the box
with matching penalties, Tufts was whistled for a bench minor that
put the Camels on a power-play. They capitalized, with senior Ryan
Joyce (Dorcester, MA) scoring at 15:26 to make it a one-goal game.
The Camels pulled Parker with 1:21 remaining, and then took a
six-on-four advantage when the Jumbos were penalized with 30
seconds remaining on the clock. However, Barchard was equal to the
task and the Jumbos closed out the win.
Walker, who assisted on the first Tufts goal, was the only
multiple scorer in the game with a goal and an assist. Barchard,
the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week, stopped 35 of 37 Camel
shots. Parker was sharp as well at the other end, recording 37
saves.
Tufts is off until hosting Babson on January 8 at 7 pm. The
Camels return to action on January 2 at the Oswego Pathfinder
Classic in New York.
