MEDFORD -- Senior Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ)

College on Thursday night at Cousens Gym.
The Jumbos (1-4), who dominated the boards to the tune of a
53-26 advantage, also got 22 points and a 10 rebounds from senior
tri-captain Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA). Sophomore
James Long (Norwell, MA) was a presence with nine

eight rebounds from sophomore Derek D'Amours (Agawam, MA).
Beyel had 14 points at halftime as the Jumbos led by 11, 37-26.
They got out to a 15-4 advantage eight minutes into the game with
six different players scoring points. The Owls cut the margin to
seven twice, including 17-10 at 10:11 following a lay-up by
freshman Eric Fazio (Hopewell Junction, NY). Tufts scored eight of
the next 10 points - six by Beyel - and their lead was in
double-figures for the last seven minutes of the first half.
Though they were 0 for 10 from three-point territory in the
first half, Tufts was 15 for 25 (60 percent) on two's while holding
Keene State to 28.6 percent (8/28) overall. D'Amours led Keene
State with 12 at the break. The Jumbos blocked five shots in the
half and had a +10 rebounding margin at 27-17.
The Tufts advantage grew to 18 points, 52-34, on a three-pointer
by Beyel six minutes into the second half. However, an 18-6 stretch
by Keene State put them back in the game. Freshman guard Geoffrey
Woodbury (Hyde Park, MA) had eight points during the run, with his
second three-pointer pulling the Owls within 58-52 at the 10:19
mark.
The Jumbos were able to get the lead back up to 14 points
(73-62) with contributions from six players during a 15-7 surge.
Keene again showed fight, closing to within seven points three more
times including 77-70 on a lay-up by freshman Anthony Mariano
(Naugatuck, CT) at 2:20. Beyel scored the next four points for
Tufts to put the lead back into double figures which is where it
would stay.
The Jumbos shot 60 percent (18/30) from the floor in the second
half to finish at 51.6 percent (33/64). Beyel finished 12 for 18
from the field and added three rebounds, two assists and two
steals. Junior point guard Matt Galvin (Floral Park,
NY) had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds. The
Jumbos could have helped themselves better at the free throw line,
where they were just 23 for 38 (60.5 percent).
Mariano finished with 14 points for Keene, while Woodbury had 13
points and five rebounds. Sophomore Cody Snow (Leyden, MA) added
