WARWICK, R.I. -- The Tufts University hockey team scored three power-play goals to take a 3-0 lead early in the second period and skated to a 4-2 victory against Johnson & Wales University in non-league action on Tuesday night.

Freshman Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) assisted on three goals and sophomore goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) made 44 saves as the Jumbos improved to 7-3-1 overall. The Wildcats, who closed within 4-2 early in the third period on Jason Pietrasiak's 13th goal of the season, dropped to 4-9.

Tufts got on the board first at the 15:01 mark of the first period on a power-play goal by junior Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ). The visiting Jumbos took the 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first period of play, when both teams had nine shots on goal.

The Jumbos extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second stanza when junior Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, CO) tallied another power-play goal just 59 seconds into the period. Tufts then added their third power play goal of the game, what would prove to be the game-winner, when sophomore Matt Amico (Buffalo, NY) scored at the 3:58 mark for the 3-0 lead.

Johnson & Wales cut the lead to 3-1 late in the second stanza on a goal by senior Jimmy Van Asch (Coon Rapids, MN) at the 17:05 mark. Tufts responded quickly however, and 100 seconds later they took a 4-1 advantage on a goal by junior Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA) to take a three-goal lead after two periods.

JWU cut the deficit to 4-2 early in the third period on a Pietraskia's goal just :45 into the stanza. That would be all the scoring for the contest however, as Tufts took the 4-2 victory.

Freshman Jake Menzel (St. Louis, MO) had 25 saves in the setback for Johnson & Wales. Of Barchard's 44 saves for Tufts, 15 came in the second period and 20 in the third.

Tufts begins a NESCAC weekend road trip on Friday night at Hamilton College. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday when they host Buffalo State in a non-conference contest at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Mass., starting at 12:30 pm.
