WILLIAMSTOWN -- The 7th ranked Williams men's basketball
defeated Tufts, 91-55, in the NESCAC opener for both teams on
Friday night at Chandler Gymnasium.
The Ephs (13-1, 1-0 NESCAC) pushed their winning streak to four
games. Co-captain Blake Schultz led the way for the Ephs with 26
points on 11 for 16 shooting from the field. Harlan Dodson was the
only other Eph in double figures, scoring 11 on four for five
shooting, and co- captain Joe Geoghegan added nine points and seven
rebounds on the game.
Senior tri-captain Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA) and
classmate Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ) were the
only Jumbos in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively,
while Pierce snagged a game-high nine rebounds. Tufts fell to 3-9
and 0-1.
Williams opened the game with a bang, jumping out to a 9-0 lead
in the first 3:16 behind five points from Geoghegan and forcing
Tufts coach Bob Sheldon to call a time-out. The Jumbos were able to
fight back, cutting the lead to 11-8 with 14:13 remaining in the
first half, but the Ephs responded with a 12-2 run to go up 23-10
and force another Tufts timeout.
The stoppage did little to curtail the Ephs' attack this time,
as a Schultz lay-up with 8:06 to go made the score 27-12 , but the
Jumbos were able to go on a 9-2 run to make the score 29-21 with
3:10 to play. It was then that Schultz took over the
game, scoring eight of the Ephs' next 10 points and going three
for three from the field to make the score 39-23 before a Geoghegan
ally-oop lay-up off an inbound as time expired made the score 41-23
headed into the break.
The Ephs held the Jumbos to a meager 35 percent shooting and
forced 10 turnovers in the first half. Meanwhile, the Jumbos did a
decent job against the Eph offense, which was not as prolific as
normal in the first 20 minutes, making 46 percent of its shots.
That changed in the second half, as the Ephs scored another 12
points in the first four minutes, capped by a Dodson fast-break
dunk that caused the Jumbos to again stop play and made the score
52-30. With 13:50 to play, the Ephs found themselves up 59-31, with
Schultz scoring 10 of the Ephs' first 18 second-half points. With
nine minutes to play, the Ephs had already scored 30 second-half
points and had put the game out of reach for the Jumbos, leading
71-41.
No Williams starter remained in the game after the 8:44 mark.
The Ephs nevertheless continued to stretch their lead, ultimately
winning by the 36-point margin of 91-55. Brian Emerson led the way
for the Ephs in the final nine minutes of the game, scoring seven
points, while Mike Moorestein and James Klemm added four
each.
Williams ultimately shot 65 percent from the field in the second
half while continuing its strong defensive play, keeping Tufts to
36 percent shooting and forcing another 14 turnovers.
The Jumbos get right back at it on Saturday at 4 pm in a
conference encounter at Middlebury College. The Ephs play the Bates
Bobcats at 4 pm tomorrow as well.
