CLINTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Anthony Scarpino scored three goals
and added an assist to lead Hamilton College to a 7-3 win against
visiting Tufts University in a New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey game at Russell Sage Rink on
Friday night.
Scarpino recorded his second hat trick in the last six games. He
also had three goals and an assist in a 7-3 upset win against
then-No. 13 Wentworth Institute of Technology on January 2. Junior
Joe Buicko and senior Chris Lorenc chipped in one goal and three
assists apiece against Tufts. Freshman Calvin Bartel made 30 saves
and improved his record to 4-3-0 in goal. The Continentals snapped
a three-game losing skid.
Junior Zach Diaco (Rumson,
NJ), freshman Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ)
and freshman Trevor John (Grosse Pointe, MI)
scored the goals for the Jumbos. Sophomore Scott Barchard
(Reading, MA) made 17 saves before he was replaced by
senior Jay McNamara (Weston, MA) midway through
the second period. McNamara stopped 16 shots.
Hamilton (6-6-1 overall, 3-5-0) set the tone early as Scarpino
scored his first goal just one minute, 21 seconds into the first
period. Sophomore Sam Choate made the score 2-0 with his first goal
this season at 11:02, and Scarpino made it a three-goal cushion 15
seconds later.
The Continentals continued to pour it on in the second period.
Buicko notched a short-handed goal 1:45 into the period for a 4-0
lead. Sophomore Bryan Kelly followed with his third goal as
Hamilton was on the power-play at 7:15. Scarpino's third goal of
the night - and ninth this season - was another short-handed tally
that made the score 6-0 at 9:32. Lorenc's ninth goal gave the
Continentals a comfortable 7-0 lead with 4:03 left in the period.
Tufts scored all three of its goals in the final period.
Hamilton was one for three on the power-play and held a 40-33
advantage in shots. Tufts (7-4-1, 4-3-1) was just one for nine with
the extra skater. The Continentals have won the last three meetings
against the Jumbos and now lead the all-time series, 8-3.
Hamilton hosts Connecticut College for another NESCAC game on
Saturday. Tufts travels to Amherst College for another conference
contest on Saturday as well.
