AMHERST -- The ninth ranked Amherst College men's hockey
stretched its unbeaten streak to nine games this afternoon by
scoring a pair of late goals in a 2-0 win over NESCAC rival Tufts
University. Amherst (10-2-2, 5-2-2 NESCAC) scored the game's only
two goals in the final five minutes of the third period against
Tufts (7-5-1/4-4-1).
While neither team scored in the first period, the stanza was
not without highlights. Amherst rookie Jamie Hawkrigg (Waterdown,
ONOT) had a huge hit during a penalty kill nine minutes into the
first. Hawkrigg nearly turned that momentum into a goal on a
power-play late in the first, but both he and senior Ted Vickers
(Chilliwack, BC) were denied by Jumbo sophomore goaltender
Scott Barchard (Reading, MA).
In the second period, Barchard made a trio of good glove saves
against Amherst during a power-play in the early going. Amherst
netminder Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, ALB) was not to be out-done,
and made a save on a 2-on-0 after the Lord Jeffs were caught in a
line change with just three minutes remaining in the period. The
second frame ended in a scoreless deadlock after Tufts senior
forward Cory Korchin (Fountain Valley, CA) and
Amherst forward Luke Arnold (Lincoln, MA) traded near misses in the
final minutes.
Amherst had a 2-on-1 chance during a short-handed rush early in
the third period, by a Tufts defender made a great play to block a
pass by Lord Jeff defender Andrew Stevenson (Newton, MA). At the
midpoint, Barchard denied a slap shot by sophomore Jeremy Deutsch
(Huntington, NY) to keep Amherst off the board.
Amherst continued to pressure the Tufts defense, and at the
15:18 mark of the third period the hosts finally broke through.
Senior Jack Baer (Edina, MN) put in a rebound after junior Trip
Wray (Walpole, MA) had his wrist shot stopped by Barchard. The
second assist on the eventual game-winner went to junior Matt Rhone
(Dedham, MA).
Less than three minutes later, Amherst added an insurance tally
on the power-play. Hawkrigg got the goal he had worked hard for all
game, swatting in his own rebound out of the air at the 18:09 mark.
Tufts called a time-out and pulled Barchard for the final minute,
but could not beat Anderson, who finished with 19 saves for the
shutout win. Barchard was solid for the Jumbos, making 38 saves,
including 18 in the final period.
