MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's indoor track & field
team began 2010 by winning a home invitational by 80 points on
Saturday afternoon at the Gantcher Center. Coach Ethan Baron's team
finished with 239 points to win the eight-team meet. Division II
UMass Lowell came in second with a 159 score.
The Jumbos were winners in eight of the 19 events. Seniors
Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) and
Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA) were the top Tufts
performers, with Engelking's time of 7.79 seconds in the 55 meter
hurdles and Hale's 4:18.97 mile run missing their respective NCAA
provisional qualifying marks by close margins.
The senior class enjoyed a successful day for the Jumbos with
five total wins. Scott Brinkman (Alamo, CA) added
a victory in the 600 meters with a 1:24.56 time. In the 1,000
meters, Jason Hanrahan (Westport, CT) was first
with a 2:33.36 finish. Isaiah Paramore (Charlotte,
NC) cleared 6'3" (1.91m) to win the high jump.
Junior Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) pole vaulted
14'2" (4.34m) to take that event. Sophomore Scott McArthur
(Denver, CO) earned his first collegiate victory with a
15:29.68 time in the 5K.
The Jumbos also scored first-place points with a win in the
4x800 relay, though just three Tufts teams were entered in the
race.
Tufts competes at Wheaton College next Saturday.
